Biyanam is one ofthe importantsub-genres offolk songs. It can be linked
with women studies. The land ofLachit Barphukan and Mula-gabharu and its
culture have a significant contribution in the record book offolklore research
regarding women songs. Hem ChandraBaraa’sNotes on the Marriage Systems
of the Peoples ofAssam is a mile stone on Assamese marriage systems.
Praffulladutta Goswami classifies oral literature or verbal art in his book
Japanar Janakristi Aru Annyana Rachana. Bhuban Mohan Boruani’s Biya
Nam, DibakarDuara’s NamatiAi, Praffulladutta Goswami’s Bara Mahar Tera
Git, Hemanta Kumar Sarma’s Kamrupi Lokagit, Gynada Devi’s Namati, Lila
Gogoi’s Asamiya Lokagit, Nandeswar Chakraborty’s Biya Nam, Phulkumari
Kalita’sAyotir Uruli, Tuntun Das’s BiyaNam, RitaMoni Deka’s Uruli are some
of the notable contributions to the treasure-house of Assamese folk song
collection especially marriage songs. Nabin Ch. Sarma discusses the typical
marriage songs of Darrang in his book Asomiya Loka Samskritir Abhas.
Phulkumari Kalita describes different types ofmarriage prevalent among the
Hindu society in her book Loka Sanskritir Dapon. Though such works and
collections marriage songs are found, no systematic study on women voices
has been done so far.
